ONDO POLICE SEEKS COOPERATION OF THE JUDICIARY ON SWIFT ADMINISTRATION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE
Ondo State Commissioner of Police, CP Abayomi Oladipo, has called for strong synergy between the Police and Judiciary in the State in order to enhance speedy administration of criminal justice, just as he urged the Chief Judge to look into remanding of defendants on trial in Police facilities due to congestion at the Correctional Centre.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the Commissioner of Police made this known when he paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Judge of Ondo State in Akure. CP Abayomi said the visit was to enable the Command interface with the Judiciary, being a major factor in the Administration of Criminal Justice.
He informed the Chief Judge on the formation of the Judges Protection Unit to provide adequate security to Judges in the State, training and retraining of Police Officers who are Prosecutors in Courts, as the legal team of the Command will also parley with the judiciary in the State.
The CP suggested that defendants having capital offence(s) should be remanded at the Correctional facilities, while suspects of minor offences should be served non custodial sentence/community service to reduce congestion as a remedial measures.
CP Abayomi also implored the Chief Judge to admonish Magistrates to serve justice on cases, instead of granting orders barring Police from inviting, investigating and arresting suspects under criminal investigations.
He stated that the electioneering period of the State was fast approaching and some mischief makers may want to use it as means of propagating false information, cyberattacks, thuggery, etc. and there is need to use some as guinea pigs to serve as deterrent to others.
In his response, the Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Olusegun Odusola, appreciated the CP for the visit and informed him that some of the issues raised are currently under consideration; and that the judicial arm of the State will work with the Police in the discharge of its constitutional duties.
