WE 'LL ENSURE REGENERATION AND PRESERVATION OF FOREST RESERVES - ONDO COMMISSIONER, OLAYATO
The Ondo State Government has promised to put necessary machineries in place to ensure adequate preservation and regeneration of the State's forest reserves, so as to secure the ozone layer for the benefit of human, animals and plants.
Speaking at a working visit to Akure forest reserve, in Aponmu area of Ondo State capital, to assess the level of planting of exotic and ingenious trees, for regeneration of the degraded part of the forest, Hon. Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry in the State, Chief Olayato Aribo, harped on the need to ensure adequate preservation and regeneration of the forest when it becomes degraded.
The Commissioner, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (Forestry sub sector), Mr Oluwagbenga Akingbasote, mni, thanked the government for releasing money to the Ministry to raise and transplant over 80,000 different species of trees, to stock the forest, through the Department of Conservation and Regeneration of the Ministry.
The Commissioner who frowned at the level of degradation of the forest, stated that the government would do everything within the law to protect all forest reserves in the State.
He, therefore, warned encroachers to desist from entering the Ondo State forest reserves for farming and illegal logging activities.
Responding, the Director of Regeneration, Mr Godwin Osere, thanked the Commissioner for finding time to visit the forest for an on the spot assessment of what the Department is doing.
He added that they have covered over 15 hectares, and would continue with the planting till they meet the target for this year’s regeneration plan.
