ONDO BEGINS REVIEW OF AGRIC POLICIES

ONDO BEGINS REVIEW OF AGRIC POLICIES

In a move to boost food production and mitigate current economic hardship, the Ondo State government has collaborated with the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) to review the State's agricultural policies.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Chief Olayato Aribo, disclosed this on Friday at a meeting with stakeholders in the agricultural sector, noting that the move is in line with best global practices and would enhance the growth of agricultural chains in the State.

Aribo added that the government and PIND efforts demonstrate a commitment to transforming the State's agricultural sector. He commended PIND for encouraging smallholder farmers by giving them the needed platform to enhance their productivity, stressing that smallholder farmers contribute not less than 87 per cent to all agricultural produce in Nigeria

The Commissioner assured that the policy, if signed into law and implemented, would boost food security, improve income and livelihood, among other things.

He, therefore, urged all stakeholders to give the exercise the required attention it deserves, maintaining that proper planning is required and the outcome of the exercise would be the fulcrum for all decisions in the agricultural sector.

A statement by the Head, Publicity and Media Relations in the Ministry, Mr. Sola Omoboyowa, added that the goal is to create a comprehensive policy guiding all agricultural practitioners in the State, and would address critical areas of the sector.

Responding, the Advocacy Manager of PIND, Mr Chuks Ofulue, explained that the Foundation is a non-profit organisation that promotes peace and equitable economic growth in the Niger Delta region, through strategic partnerships and collaborations.

He stated that the Foundation has been contributing to strengthening and stabilising the promotion of peace, poverty reduction initiatives, gender support initiatives, among others. Mr. Ofulue disclosed that PIND is working with the government to develop agricultural policies that would transform the State.

Addressing the participants, the resource person at the workshop, Prof. Okunlola James Olaniyi, observed that the policy is a fundamental tool that would boost agricultural development, and provide a roadmap to drive the agricultural objectives and strategies of the present administration.

In the same vein, Mr Franklin Oloniju of Life and Peace Development Organisation (LAPDO) said the document was developed in 2018, but needed to be reviewed to meet current realities, for better performance.

He expressed optimism that through the amendment the State would tap into vast potentials available in the State's agricultural sector.
