WORLD FOOD DAY: AIYEDATIWA AFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO ERADICATION OF HUNGER AND ENHANCEMENT OF FOOD SECURITY
Governor of Ondo State, His Excellency Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has reiterated his commitment to the eradication of hunger in the State through adequate support and encouragement to smallholder farmers and big farmers for enhanced food production.
The Governor spoke through the Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Chief Olayato Aribo, at the year 2024 World Food Day celebration, held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Akure.
Aiyedatiwa described the day as one which is dedicated to tackling global hunger, where people around the world gather to declare commitment to put an end to hunger and promote food security.
He said this year’s theme is "Right to Foods for a better life and a better future," stressing that the theme spotlights the importance of diversity, nutrition, affordability and accessibility of food in the right state and quantity as well as safety and environmental sustainability of all agricultural value chains that promote food security.
In his welcome address, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Chief Olayato Aribo, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry ( Agric sub-sector), Mrs. Foluke Tunde-Daramola, reiterated that the Ministry will continue to provide technical and advisory services, and subsidised farm inputs to boost agricultural production.
He called on farmers at various farm settlements to desist from encroachment and selling of government land to avoid imminent sanction.
Likewise, the Permanent Secretary, Forestry/ Produce sub-sector of the Ministry, Mr. Olugbenga Akingbesote,mni, appreciated the Governor for his efforts in agriculture, while calling on the citizenry to engage in agriculture to tackle food crisis and the hardship currently experienced in the country.
One of the resource persons who spoke on the theme for this year's celebration, "Right to Food, a Better Life, and a Better Future", Alhaji Kunle Sanni, charged the government to be more proactive in implementing its life-changing agricultural programmes.
Sanni, a former Permanent Secretary, observed the need to give adequate support to farmers in areas such as developing a land allocation system, storage facilities for preservation, highly subsidized agro inputs, provision of enough tractors, market availability, post-harvest expansion, accessible roads for easy transportation, as well as developing strategies for management to encourage young farmers.
